I've been working in the fireswamp lately and just installed a drawing table in the gazebo. I've been drawing pictures of R.O.U.S.'s ... rodents of unusual size. This summer, I smoothed out the open space, planted a dozen trees, and grew the enormous castor beans just beyond the gazebo.... yes, that is an ipad on the drawing table.

We have lots of banana plants, but no bananas. Here are the plants from the basement that overwintered in the cold. I'm surprised anything is still alive, but it is.
I put out the tropicals amongst the perennials in the garden after the 30th of May. A few additions from local plant shops too.

Here's a new bowl with a Sea Monster Fish on it. Part of a large series of bowls I'm working on. The black is an engobe wet clay body which is applied to the surface of a wet bowl. It will be bisqued, then coated with a clear glaze.

Here's my newest painting of the Jared Coffin House in Nantucket. I thought the painting was lost this morning, but it came together mostly by accident this afternoon. The Inn is old and creepy, big rooms with a striped wood floor. The building is neat, nonetheless. I like old and creepy sometimes.

This is a painting I did from a post card I bought at the Villa. It's a great place and Tiepolo did all the murals inside. The Villa has been in the same family for 400 years. Maxfield Parrish did some paintings of the guest house when he stayed there.

Palladio's Villa Rotunda is at the top of the painting. It's a nice walk from the City centre of Vicenza.

This is one of my favorite places ever. I don't like crowds , so you have to get there early now, and the waiter in the back room has problems with chairs out of alignment...(don't know what his problem is).

Anyway, I've been going to Mc Sorley's since my college days...( 7 years of college, down the drain.) - John Belushi.

This is a painting I did of the bar and all the stuff behind it. 2 Dark Ales, cheaper than one.

This is a painting from the Horticultural and botanical section of the book which features various garden shops. This flower shop is called Pequeno Jardim from Lisbon, Portugal. I'm trying to do another sketchbook and nearing completion of my Garden book- " A hobby gone Berserk". The sketches above are mostly for my " An Italian Sketchbook". It's taking me about 5 days to do 10 sketches on average, so it's going to be awhile to do a 100 paintings. I'll have some better images soon. 1st I pencil in the drawings, and then ink them with a dip pen and sepia ink. I think dip pens are one of the best things ever invented. Stay tuned.

Here's a number of images stitched together of the Florian Cafe in Venice. I just returned. The Florian is a very historic cafe, and filled with paintings, decorative designs, and most of all, good coffee. I recommend. Just across from the Doge's Palace and through the gallery. I'm working on a Sketch Book of Italy, and shot 7,800 panoramic reference photos in 2 weeks. Oh, my.

Here's a composite picture of a half dozen shots of St. Peter's in Roma. What a place. We climbed to the top of the Cupola last week. I was in Italy for a couple of weeks working on a new sketchbook and shot 7,846 pictures. Is that enough? By the end of the trip I was sick of shooting. IPAD photo sighting! It's incredible

Here's the first shot of the new Ipad and all I can say is that it's incredible. The resolution is crisp, bright and the battery life is amazing! It's lightweight, and of course, the New York Times interface works great. I'm having a bit of trouble with the image for the time being as it's frozen, but I'm sure it they'll work the bugs out on it. While you're here, please look at my art below.
Don't I get $100,000. from someone for the first live picture? Can you send it to me quickly? My cable bill is due.

Here's a painting I did awhile ago of one of the nicest stores I've ever seen. It's in Lisbon, and not far from Rossio Square. I recommend. The store has been there forever, and filled with boxes of seeds, apple trees outside. Eat your heart out Walmart. The painting will be shown in the Society of Illustrators 52 Annual Exhibition in March.

Here are a couple more designs with type for my greeting cards. I wanted something that wouldn't take up too much space in a store, lightweight and easy to produce. Once the template is made, they are easy to cut out, snap together without glue, and I've made a tab on the left side so they each can connect together as a set.... The saga continues.

As everyone knows, I'm a real Apple Computer fan. Here is an Actual photo of the new IPAD. It's amazing! I've been using it for the past couple of days, and the resolution is incredible, it's lightweight, and has beautiful rounded edges just like the Iphone. As it's a beta product, there's a few glitches, and I have yet to refresh the screen image. Does anyone know how? I like the size of the new IPAD too. You don't have to squint to see the screen. It's almost like its a water color painting or something. I can't explain it. Well, gotta run, I'm going to run some tests on it. If you see Steve, please tell him I LOVE the new model! These are some of the tools I use on my water color paintings. On the left is a folding palette which I can take on the road. I clean the palette at the beginning of each painting. Next, an asian brush carrier with a million dollars worth of Series 7 brushes. (Nearly) Next, a selection of sepia inks which I mix. A plastic bag full of Winsor & Newton water colors ( I buy them mostly on Ebay) 5 ml = average about $1.50 per tube, and lastly, my water color dishes that I made in ceramics class this summer. ( The largest one is purchased) At the top is a mahl stick which I purchased at the flea market. It's actually a collapsible rifle cleaner that I adapted with a leather top. That's it, and all you need to be an artist.

I work on the travelling desk that I made last month. It has space under the drawing area for 25 pieces of water color paper. On the right side is an ink well, work area, and removable water dish. The desk can be attached to a tripod to work on location.

I just finished the inking on this drawing from my Nantucket Series. The ink is a mixture of several brown & red waterproof inks. There is a very tight pencil drawing underneath all of the inking. Next I'll start the watercolor washes, starting with the lightest areas and move over to the darker washes.

My goal with the paintings of Nantucket is to have a show somewhere on the Island. I was so excited about this series that I couldn't sleep last night. I was up at 4 AM working on this painting of a Yellow victorian house somewhere in the village. It sits atop a hill away from the crowds. I like that.

The houses in Codfish on Nantucket have vines that grow above the roofs. It's one of the prettiest villages I've been to in the US. It's a delight for an artist's eyes and paint brush. Here's last night's painting. I've done about 18 or so paintings of Nantucket so far, and I'm trying to finish 3o in the next few weeks. The paintings are all watercolors on Arches 300 # hot press paper. Most from this series are 8.5 high x 18 inches wide. I'm going to have a show of the paintings somewhere on the Island. Any suggestions?

I'm continuing with my watercolors of Nantucket and getting ready for a trip to the Island soon.

I'm going to finish some of the paintings on location. I built a travelling box which fits onto a tripod base. I found a folding chair at a local sporting goods store. Here's a painting of the Nantucket bank building, and what I assume is an old theater? It looks like it belonged to the ancient brick building on the left. If you know, let me know.

This is a detail of a building called one of the "Three sisters". There are 3 substantial brick buildings next to one another just up from Main Street in Nantucket. It's a water color painting about 10x13 inches. I haven't used water colors in awhile, so I'm quite excited about it. It feels GREAT!

This is one of the first of 32 paintings of Nantucket I'm working on. It's on 300 # arches water color paper, inked with waterproof drawing ink, then colored with Winsor & Newton water colors. Stay tuned. I'm hoping to finish some of them on location later this month.
